Long Range Strategic Art Plan
In late 2002 the City hired a consultant, Barney & Worth, Inc., to develop a long range strategic art plan. Barney & Worth began their research by interviewing key stakeholders and then held a public meeting in January. The public meeting was intended to guide and help define what Richland stakeholders considered public art. Over the course of 2003 Staff and the consultants have been working with all stakeholders, all of the City's boards and commissions, and Council to revise the draft Long Range Strategic Art Plan and draft Policies and Guidelines.
As part of the information gathering the City began cataloging the art in Richland. As a result the City now has a draft document with all of the City's public art pieces.
Canakkale Sculpture Donation
In July 2003, the City held the first art unveiling ceremony since preparations for the long range plan began. Jerry and Corky Greenfield generously donated the Lee Kelly sculpture, “Canakkale”, which was placed next to the reflecting pool fountain in the Carol Woodruff Plaza located in the newly revitalized downtown area. Sculptor Lee Kelly is one of the Pacific Northwest’s premier artists and is well known for his work with stainless steel. This will be the first donated art piece since the revitalization project was completed in November 2002.
Bob Ellis Transfer Center Mural Project
Also in 2003, the City partnered with Ben Franklin Transit for the Bob Ellis Transfer Center Mural Project. Ben Franklin Transit was in the process of upgrading the transfer center and wanted to enhance the area with art, similar to mural programs in larger cities. The City and Ben Franklin Transit partnered to provide each organization with all of the tools to make this project a success. Ben Franklin Transit prepared each of the panels before they were painted on, then sprayed an anti-graffiti sealant before posting them to the bus shelters. The City supplied the paint and paid each organization $5 per square foot to cover the cost of supplies. The artwork will be unveiled during a ceremony in Spring of 2004.Nominations for 2008 Art Recognition Award
The Richland Arts Commission is now accepting nominations for the Art Recognition Award, which recognizes local contributions made in support of the arts. The award is intended to distinguish two recipients for their outstanding efforts in 2008 - one individual and one organization (for profit or not-for-profit).
