John Fox was appointed to the Richland City Council in September 2002 to fill a vacancy for an unexpired term. He since has been elected to the council for the term remainder and two additional terms. At their first meeting in 2012, the Richland City Council members selected him to serve as the city's mayor for another two-year period. As mayor, he has led the formulation of a long-range strategic plan to assure orderly planning for future growth and development in harmony with preserving and enhancing Richland’s highly valued quality of living.
John is a 60-year resident of Richland. He was raised in Portland and San Francisco and graduated from Oregon State University with bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering. In his career at General Electric Company and Battelle he first worked in various engineering development positions and later in management in a variety of technical fields ranging from economics and statistics to computer systems and information services. He served on inter-contractor committees for Hanford services and Battelle corporate inter-laboratory committees and was active in several professional societies. In the 1960s he was an instructor at the Joint Center for Graduate Study, Richland, and an Adjunct Associate Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. He retired from full-time work at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in 1992.
Active in community service, John was elected to the Richland School Board for two terms, 1975-1983, during the period of a full boom-to-bust cycle in the community. He also served a term as Board President. He was appointed to the Richland Parks and Recreation Commission in 1996 and in 1997 was also appointed to the Richland Planning Commission.
John is a member of the Richland Kiwanis Club and currently serves on the board of the Tri-Cities Development Council. John is married and has three children and two grandchildren.
